Booklet Project Art 230
This project involved designing a presentation booklet suitable for gifting to a specific individual. The article had to be chosen from the most recent General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I chose this article to give to my daughter who needs encouragement right now. The article is about finding the "Sunshine in the Soul" even during times when it's hard to see any light in your life, and how we can all be more aware of the personal, hidden struggles that others are having. The author, Elder Jeffrey B. Holland, uses a popular LDS hymn, "There is Sunshine in My Soul Today," as a theme all through the article.

The design concept incorporates colors intended to evoke sunshine, with light yellow, orange, darker orange, and blue for contrast. Using a 4-column grid, the elements of type, image, and color are arranged to present a unique, yet unified appearance. My thought was to portray the beautiful uniqueness that is spoken of in the article by varying the alignment of the text in the columns, and the height of the color side bars. The blockquotes are part of the natural reading flow, yet break the margin while staying within the grid. As is taught in the article, different elements can work together to make a harmonious whole, but only if all parts adhere to the base design.
